What a beautiful book! I knew about Chetna Makan from the Great British Bake Off. I was drawn to her bakes the entire time she was on the show. Her spices, her flavor combinations and the confidence behind her recipes captivated me. The stories that accompany the recipes in the book are delightful and make the food even more meaningful- and isn't that what cooking and sharing a meal is all about? Truly unique and adventuresome yet appealing to the familiar ingredients of my usual repertoire. Cardamom is one of my favorite spices. So many of my favorite spices are included in these recipes but I've never found them all in one place! Although I've just started trying the recipes the ones I've tried are spectacular. Note: I'm a new baker but with an experienced pallet. While the spices were familiar some of the combinations were delightfully new to me. The pictures are gorgeous and helpful. Clear instructions. Most of the meat dishes look adaptable to vegetarian ( which I am). The rest of the recipes look intriguing, achievable and yummy! I can't wait to try them all! - Bradetta (aka the Gingham Altar Gal)

Most British bakers are all about sugar and white flour; Chetna adds a fabulous Indian twist that makes her goods exciting and flavorful. Very good information about how to use the various seasonings in other cooking as well. This is the best deal you will ever get for reasonable recipes (that can be prepared by any skill level baker) that are totally delicious!

The pear upside down cake alone is worth whatever you have to pay for this book.

We've made three recipes so far - and they've all been excellent and unusual. Very happy that Chetna's book has, if anything, exceeded the expectations we had as GBBO fans.

The first thing I tried was the Degi Mirch pie, just as the recipe. It turned out great and my family loved it! And they are basically meat and potatoes guys. I made the cover cake - it turned out great! Beautiful book and lots of info about the spices used throughout.

I love this book. I fell in love with Chetna from the only season of the Great British Baking Show on Netflix. I have seen every episode many time and was always intrigued by what Chetna was making. I would never be able to come up with the ideas and spice combinations. The ideas are great and the instructions are easy to follow. I have only made three things from this so far but have many more I want to make.

Chetna Makan was, famously, nearly the winner of a season of the Great British BakeOff. She made some appealing and unusual recipes, and the book is full of similar ones. If you are interested in spicing up your baking, this book will help you do so. There are a few too many not-quite-baking recipes for my preferences, but that's just me.I've made a couple of things that worked well, so the recipes themselves are reliable. You'll have to be able to translate a few British baking terms into US practice (make sure you have a scale that measures in grams). And you'll have to follow her shaping instructions carefully; they aren't always as clear as they could be. You'll also find yourself in an Indian grocery store buying a few unusual spices. But its worth it for the results and the fresh ideas.

This is for the very experienced baker who has all day to work on a recipe. Each recipe involves multiple, multiple steps and hard to find ingredients.

Started this book a few days ago & really liked the beginning. Thought it was very interesting & I liked the protagonist ( The Lawyer Matt Fielder) very much. I really enjoy books more when there is someone in the novel that I feel is a good, decent person & he was it. The story became more interesting as a team developed and started working together to help an accused who was mentally challenged to avoid the death penalty. The details of the investigation and legal proceedings were easily explained and understood. I do not like improbable theories and this was a down to earth honest writing of the NY State legal system; but the story didn't take place in NYC or Long Island; it took place way out in the AdirondackMountains in North Western NY. A very different setting for a novel that added to its enjoyment. The third night I read the book, I read straight through for about 4 hours until I couldn't see straight & it was about 5 am. It was that good that I couldn't stop; but finally did have to stop. I finished it the next night. It was an excellent read and had a good steady pace. I would have like the ending to be more detailed and expanded; It felt a little rushed and I still have some unanswered questions after it - but all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed it & can definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys legal thrillers. This one is different to be sure.

I really liked the main character. I enjoyed the "friendly narrator" style (think, Morgan Freeman, Shawshank Redemption) which was used to explain legal procedures and strategies, but also offered insight into Matt's thought process. The story line involving FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome) was different, and I liked that about the book as well. I would dispute that the suspect was very handsome, given his apparent affliction, which (even the book mentions) typically causes physical facial birth defects. But, I suspended disbelief on that because I found the story so interesting.Unfortunately, the "wrinkle" in the story was pretty obvious, and the culprit was not a surprise. The slapdash, quick wrap up after the reveal felt like the writer just had to end the book quickly. Too bad, because the rest of the book was a nice slow build.

This was a great read. Klempner’s style of writing was just so different than the usual lawyer-ease that most of us don’t understand. I really enjoyed it more and more as I read on. So refreshing. The ending was a real shocker! Being a witness to the law process of a Capital Crime was so interesting. Who knew what it all involved? How important is a life? As the story develops, it’s so easy to come to the same conclusion of guilt. And how wrong we all can be! It sure brought home the desperate need of “any suspect” (guilty or not) to get the best defense that is possible. Nobody could have foreseen ahead of time what the best defense was really worth and how much it would cost! At such a terrible cost to himself, Fielder gave his all – he could do no less. Twists and turns all kept me reading right to the bitter end. As I got so fully involved in the characters, I could have cried at the end. So so sad – for everybody concerned. The book was well written and very interesting – great story! Always glad to add another author’s name to my “list!”

Really good book, the characters were believable & the fast start got me hooked right away. I liked the main character alot, the lawyer trying to get away from it all, who gets called in to try to save a "slow" young man from the death penalty. The supporting cast was alot of fun, from the drunken PI, the gorgeous gay jury consultant & the townie game warden who found the bodies.I took off one star, since the main suspects family goes from one kid to three so suddenly, without any of the townies bothering to mention this fact to investigators till 1/2 way thru the book - really?Otherwise it was a good murder mystery, I really loved how it ended. I'll look for more from this author.

Joseph Klempner is a fantastic author. This is the second book by him I've read. The first was Felony Murder which was also excellent. His characters become so real I feel as though I've known them for years. And his descriptions, such as those of Flat Lake in winter, are as real as photographs in my mind. I'll read all of his books, and I feel sure that each one will leave me wanting still more.

I chose this book because I like legal thrillers. Was I disappointed? No, I learned a lot about capital punishment. The necessary steps that must be followed to insure the rights of a prisoner accused of murder in the firstDegree. You can better understand why it takes so long for the process to work. The lead character, Matt, demonstrates a strength of character that I would want inAn attorney. As McClure says, things are not always as they seem....Good read. I would recommend it for summer reading...

My second book by this author and better read but both were very very good and entertaining. A great plot and clean but good ending to a book that was very hard to put down once you get into the real "meat" somewhere about one fourth along the way. Great read and well worth your time and money. "Drawback", I figured out the real culprit with about 7 or 8 chapters to go. Don't let that tidbit of information deter you from reading this. It fun as well as informative about several legal matters that I found to be eye-opening. A definite 4 star and could have been 5 had I not figured it so soon.

This book is written as though a third person is confiding the story of a defense attorney, Matt, who is hired to defend Johnathon, a mentally handicapped young man. Jonathon is accused of brutally murdering his grandparents while they slept. The writer tells the story as a third person, who has all of the inside information. There are a few twists but I felt that the ending was somewhat predictable and a bit forced, otherwise I enjoyed the book..

#64,818 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I lived in the Philippines for 8 years and now live in Thailand. I have visited Japan and ski in South Korea every year. I was looking for a book that would explain why northeastern Asian countries [Japan, Taiwan and South Korea] have succeeded and why southeastern countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines are less successful. Hong Kong and Singapore were not considered because they are city/states and don't have a rural population. This book absolutely nailed it when it came to telling me what I wanted to know. This book answered my questions directly and explained how the economics and politics worked in northeastern Asia and what didn't work elsewhere.

This is one of the best economic history/development books out there. I stumbled on this via Gatesnotes. It was a page turner. As someone who is very familiar with Asia-I lived in Japan and frequently travel to the region for work, I must say that Studwell displayed amazing knowledge of history and culture, and wove that nicely with economics. What is also amazing is the the parallels with the current economics of the west...hulling out of the middle class through outsourcing of core manufacturing activities with an eye to pure short term results. A must read for policy makers in Latin America and Africa who are being hoodwinked by the laissez faire prescriptions of World Bank and IMF bureaucrats--folks that pretend to know how the world works through mathematical theories. Yes, governments should let entrepreneurs take risk and make money, but by golly, get so long as get something in return by forcing them to contribute to long term economic development!

It is a quite nice book on the Asian economic development experience. The main conjecture of the author is that active state policies have been key factor for the economic performance of North Asia (Japan, South Korea, Taiwan). This policies can be summed up as agrarian reform, export disciplined industrialization and repressed financial markets. Studwell is an acid critic of market oriented policies and, in this sense, his analysis is close to List or Ha-Joon Chang.Although his historical exploration of the Asian experiences is appealing and informative, I am not sure if the suggested policy implications are right. For instance, it is not clear when or why a country must switch from its developmentalist strategy to a more market-friendly regime. In addition, it appears to me the author has understated political stage (South Korean development was based on a dictatorship). All in all, any person interested on Asia or in topics of economic development must read this book.

I would imagine that this could teach leaders of developing countries how to get the most out of the world economy to build their own nation. I picked up this book to understand how the relatively isolated Chinese economy became the powerhouse it is today. The three part strategy is clear from this book, but the repetition became quite dull. The anecdotes helped provide some idea of how the landscape changed due to the economy in the countries the author visited. Although these anecdotes didn't have a style that particularly grabbed my attention, the author does an excellent job of providing supporting arguments for the strategy. This work cites quite a number of sources and the facts themselves are interesting to know by themselves. The book goes through the stories of the major economic players in Asia today, ending with China. India is conspicuously absent.

'How Asia Works' passes the sniff test in that it actually helps to explain current events in Asia - for example the current fun and games with the Thai government's guaranteed rice purchases, which post-date the publication of the book. The most important premise in the book is the need for land reform to fund industrialisation.By 'land reform' he means distributing land equally among farming families, by taking it off the big landowners.Land reform does not come easily:In Japan the first (and initially successful) reform was after the Meiji Restoration, and the second immediately after the Second World War.In Taiwan it followed the defeat of the Kuomintang (KMT) by the Communists in China. Initially Communist land reform in China was popular with the people, and the KMT were forced to copy it in Taiwan to achieve some popularity with the locals. In South Korea Syngman Rhee's government resisted land reform until it was nearly swept into the sea by Kim Il Sung's invasion. When the South Koreans retook Korea, they found Communist land reform was very popular with the farmers, and were forced to accept it.The ensuing agricultural boom gave these governments the cash to fund industrialisation. Studwell shows how they largely got it right, by copying the 19th Century Prussian model.(In China and North Korea the agricultural boom ended when the Communists collectivised the farms.)In South East Asia land reform never took place, probably because events were not dramatic enough to force it to happen. Consequently large landowners live very well, while ordinary farmers are very poor, and agricultural productivity is low.In describing industrialisation, Studwell compares the successful Japan/South Korea/Taiwan model of competition between state supported companies (with the creative destruction of the failure of some) and the discipline of serving export markets versus the failure to introduce competition and export discipline in South East Asia. The outcome is exemplified by Toyota/Honda/Hyundai versus Proton. The failings in South East Asia described in this book are pretty much as described in Studwell's earlier "Asian Godfathers".'How Asia Works' attracted a fair amount of criticism here in Hong Kong for appearing to advocate financial repression (paying derisory interest rates on household savings, enforced by exchange controls) and state planning - we have a very good vantage point of this process in China, and worry about the effects - for example an uncontrolled shadow banking system and misallocation of easy credit by State Owned Enterprises.Studwell does not advocate this as a universal panacea - he points out the problems that South Korea had, and that they were lucky to get away with it - and that the system gets a country to a certain level of development, after which it is necessary to modernise - which may not always work - as in Japan. His conclusion is that South East Asia will probably never fulfil its potential, and that China might. This book offers a helpful political-economic model for those attempting to understand Asia generally, and, most importantly, China.
