From Publishers Weekly
The short, brutish life of Stanley Ketchel, the middleweight champion of the ragtime era who ruled the ring until his murder at age 24, serves as inspiration for Blake's action-packed new novel (after Handsome Harry). Blake follows Ketchel's career as he runs away from a loveless, violent farm home at age 15, "rides the rods" with the hoboes to Butte, Mont., where he first steps in the ring, and then goes pro in San Francisco. When Jack Johnson becomes heavyweight champ, the nation goes mad, and none more so than Ketchel, who itches to vanquish the confident black pugilist in a rematch. From Gibson Girl Evelyn Nesbitt, who enjoys a passionate liaison with Ketchel, to Emmett Dalton, last of the old-time outlaws, Blake brings to life a huge cast of characters across a glittering, vital America. The author writes with a loopy narrative drive, equal parts Dos Passos and Doctorow, suggesting vaguely that Ketchel's rage and murderous passions were at least in part inspired by a nostalgia for the Old West he had missed by a mere decade. Though the liberal embellishments of sex and violence can sometimes tip the book into weary cliché, Blake has spun a fascinating tale. (Aug.)

From Library Journal

"You're a bum , he told me/ and you'll always be a bum . . . and it's too bad he's been dead/ so long/ for now he can't see/ how beautifully I've succeeded/ at/ that." True to his words, this prolific poet loves to play the oversexed bum, continually lashing out at other writers, the rich, and anyone who fails to appreciate his brilliance. This collection takes a new turn, though, as Bukowskinow in his sixtieslooks back on some tender memories of youth. Other redeeming features include a self-mocking humor and a love for cats. For larger collections, and those whose readers are not easily offended by four-letter words. Like so much of his poetry, it is a mixed bag. If you like him, you will like some of this work, maybe even love a few. Even if you like him, though, you might find a lot here that doesn’t live up to your expectations. He addresses this, several times, and seemed to be struggling to fit in to our idea of him, and maybe even his own idea of himself, after the readings stopped, after he found success, after the struggle was gone, what was left? You can see him reaching for it here, for sure. Does he reach it? I don’t think so. Few of the poems here survive in our idea of what Bukowski made. But as a writer, an artist, and a person true to his vision of himself, he continued. In a few years, he would give us “Last Night on Earth” so, it is good to watch the progress.

These crude and raw feelings are exactly what we need when we don’t find anything real around. It’s life as it is, from the perspective of a man that lived so much, and given in the most honest way he could.Sometimes I felt sad, sometimes I felt his joy, his sarcasm and his irony. I felt I lived a whole different life after reading these poems, and it was such an adventurous life, in its own, unique way.I guess this is something one can read after living the ups and downs of life, and I’m sure I’ll read and understand it differently 10 years from now.

Arrived a week early. The book itself will make you laugh, cry, cringe, restore your hope, but also increase your disdain for humanity. We all are the same and can learn a lot from one another. LISTEN before responding. Take others thoughts and feelings into consideration. Thanks for your lovely and unique insight Bukowski.

It’s no wonder that most of my favorite bands, films, authors, and art are influenced by CB. This collection of works contains some of his most off color and vivid imagery that most would be appalled by. Underneath it all is a shade of the human condition we all try to glam up or conceal entirely. I couldn’t contour his wit if I tried. You’re welcome for the make-up metaphors.

Real. I love how Buk can take one seemingly not so wonderful memory and hold it up for examination in the most modest of lights and show you the beauty of even our most s***ty humanistic qualities as something meaningful and pure.

I just started looking Charles Bukowski not too long ago.... I love his poetry, it makes no sense to me,but i don't mind, his poetry tells stories, and i can image myself be there with him and feel what he feels when i read them, i love it, definitely recommend reading his books, an old man with stories to tell. Love it

Bold an honest, the only way he could write. Often harsh and brutal insight to what he saw as societys flaws or fantasies. Mr Bukowski never lets me down. RIP

Filled with poems about life, love, loss, happiness, failure, and of course, drinking. Regardless of where you are in life, there will be at least one poem that will resonate with you. Bukowski was a talented writer and storyteller and had a way of making even mundane things interesting. I originally purchased the book because some of its contents were read on the movie Beautiful Creatures, and I was intrigued.

From Publishers Weekly
Fresh from her YA biography of Walt Whitman, Reef again subtly traces the links between the life and the work of a major American writer. This story begins in the middle, as John Steinbeck (1902-1968) travels among the migrant laborers of the Great Depression in California, gathering material for newspaper articles and for what would be his greatest work, The Grapes of Wrath. Other key experiences are presented chronologically, from the author's childhood in Salinas, Calif. (which he drew on for East of Eden) to a scientific trip along the coast to Mexico, during which he heard the story that formed the basis for The Pearl. According to Reef, Steinbeck did not seek fame or critical approval, wishing instead to make "people understand each other" in his varied writings, a goal that perhaps explains his enthusiastic embrace by the public as well as by the Pulitzer and Nobel juries. This thoughtful story, supplemented by more than 70 black-and-white photos, is as nonjudgmental and upbeat as Steinbeck himself strove to be, and an excellent introductory work. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10-This biography is more a photographic essay and historical narrative of the 1920s-1960s than an in-depth portrayal of this important American writer. Steinbeck's compassion for working people and his deep belief in human goodness are indeed emphasized, but Reef stresses the events that had the greatest influence on his work. The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the plight of migrant workers, and World War II are part of the American scene so well depicted in his writings. Not much attention is given to Steinbeck's personal life, although the author does touch upon his worrisome, serious nature and his unease with fame. Abundant black-and-white photos are a favorable feature in bringing the era to life. Some critical analysis of his writing is interspersed with the historical facts. This is a very readable introduction to the writer's life and work, but it is not as introspective as Jay Parini's John Steinbeck (Holt, 1995).

From Booklist
Gr. 7^-12. With the same handsome open design and clear, unpretentious prose as Reef's Walt Whitman (1995), this photobiography sets Steinbeck's work firmly within the social conditions of his time. The focus is not on Steinbeck's personal relationships but on how his themes and his writing style grew out of his concern about what was happening to ordinary people in hard times. Reef talks directly about Steinbeck's ideas and stories and his struggle to write about people in a casual style, neither difficult nor showy. The quotes are wonderful, never pompous, and the plain, strong words may make young adults want to read the classic novels, from East of Eden to Grapes of Wrath. The many black-and-white photos throughout include portraits of Steinbeck and his family and friends, and also stirring photos, by artists such as Dorothea Lange, of those whose suffering he dramatized with depth and dignity. There's a selected bibliography but, unfortunately, no documentation of sources, even for direct quotes. Hazel Rochman
